Event 2: The Getty
Event 2: The Getty
For my second event I decided to go to the Getty with a free of my friends. We always knew it as the beautiful building on top of the hill overlooking LA. I had been to the Getty Villa so I was excited to see what kind of art work the prestigious Getty was housing. From the second you get off the tram that takes you to the top of the hill, you are instantly greeted with artwork and modern architecture. The stairs taking you up to the Getty Center are sprinkled with sculptures. Once we finally got to the art, the array of pieces were amazing and some from the most famous artists in the world.
As you can see from the above picture, the American artist Robert Mappethorpe had an exhibit. I had never heard of him before but after seeing his work I was impressed. He was very into classic black and white portraits. Judging from his pictures, I could tell he loved contrast and how it set the mood for an image. Although his exhibit was prominent and a headlining one, it certainly wasn't the only place to find exquisite art.
After meandering through his exhibit, we made our way back to the edge of the Getty and were able to take in some incredible views of Los Angeles. Unfortunately it was overcast this day but the views were breathtaking nonetheless. As we kept walking through each building, we stumbled across some amazing paintings from the 1700-1800s. It was really cool to see a Vincent Van Gogh painting and too try and get up close to see very little brush stroke. After seeing all these massive paintings, it gave me a perspective of just how long and difficult these paintings really were.
All in all the trip to The Getty was a lot of fun and very interesting. After exploring the Getty Center I was able to understand how architecture, technology, and art all come together not only in just the art pieces themselves, but also in the construction of such a complex museum. I was excited to finally have the chance to go see what the Getty had to offer and walked away very impressed with what I saw.
